Help by the Beatles

There was in the news recently an item about re-recorded Beatles compositions utilizing the state of the art methods. For Beatles music believers —Beatlesmaniacs, as they may want to label themselves— such news might be a enermously welcome development, for it indicates they will hear all over again their much loved singing group. But while such re-recording may have executed the copy of the songs in a new format, experts and sound trippers agree that old-time records and speaker arrangements still duplicate the music better than any more modern technology. Exceptional playback is what recording music all about, most definitely for such music as those of the Beatles.

A group of four that began in Liverpool, England, the Beatles was first noticed in early 1960’s to grow into one of pop music’s popular occurrence –if not the greatest— for all time. Starting with songs of easy pieces but in tune with the rock and roll variety at the time, the Beatles progressed into more or less newfangled music created with various instruments and gadgets, including a box of thumb tacks shaken close in front of the microphone. Sitar music in that haunting philosophic song ‘Within You, Without You’ was a classic instance of their departure from mainline music composition.

The Beatles enchanted a whole generation. Years past the musicians’s break-up teeners were nonetheless moving to the music, and even full adults felt the pleasure though only remembering, during the Beatlefest ’74 in Brooklyn, New York. But what made them be accepted? What made teeners and bobbysoxers to yell with all their might on spotting them? What made them enchant the American teen fans preceding their landing in the US? In the voice of an American youth when the singers embarked on their very first US tour and performed in the Ed Sullivan Show, “They were distinctive”.

Their music was different. American contemporary or R&R musicians in those times were offering music with roughly single mood and color, by their tunes and by their stroke. They were homogenous, so to speak, and stereotyped. But not the Beatles, who included instrumental sounds uncommon in pop music at the time, such as the oboe, the flute, and sitar, even full orchestra addenda. Instrumental use is illustrated by the piano (Martha, My Dear), brass (Sgt.Pepper’s…), trumpet (Penny Lane), the flute (Fool On The Hill), the sitar referred to above and a number of others.

They had literature and philosophy spooled together. While other music-makers talk of unreturned love in a million versions, the Beatles talked about love differently in “Because”, “I’m Only Sleeping”, “Two of Us”, and “I Will” as examples. Even faith, later, in the classic “Let It Be” and “Within You, Without You”. Social observations “Eleanor Rigby”, “She’s Leaving Home”, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Nowhere Man” presented the various sides of life and the way they touch each one of us.

They were non-conformists, almost at any rate, shown in “Taxman”, “Mother Nature’s Son”, “Revolution” and “A Day in the Life”, and of course their mop style haircut. But really it is because they popped out when the people was eager for them, creating the sort of music that was unique”.
